About us: We are lovers of ink. Specifically, black ink. As a medium which has been around for thousands of years, we celebrate the purity and simplicity of the application.
Our Name: 墨水(Pinyin: mo shui), which is pronounced “Moe Shuay.” The literal meaning from Chinese to English is, “black water.”
Why this Group exists: To feature work done with traditional black ink, to help others learn about the medium, and to promote Deviant Artists who interpret subjects utilizing black ink line and/or washes done with same.
In short, we exist to let people know that “Ink, it’s not just for breakfast, anymore!”
Who can join: Anyone. You don’t have to work in ink to join, however, we will only accept submissions done in traditional black ink.
How to Join: Simply click on the “Join” button. If you don’t want to become a member, we invite you to watch us in order to see what others create using this traditional medium.
Submitting: We want to present exceptional ink work (sorry, no mixed medium), so submissions will be monitored for quality and consistency. Yes, the criteria we apply is tough. We want your best. We want others to see your best. Think before you submit.
To submit, you must be a member. Then your work will be reviewed. In the event that your work is not accepted, you will be given a reason why not. To keep things consistent, there is a limit of 2 deviations per week.
If you happen to see outstanding ink work around DA, your suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Anyone can suggest a favorite. Just make sure it isn't your own work. If it is, it will be declined.
Styles: We will take a look at anything, as long as it is traditional black ink. We invite you to browse through our galleries and favorites to get a better idea of what we like to share.
Subject: As this group accepts all ages (as well as can be watched by anyone), we are not able to accept mature themed works.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to send us a note or post it on our front page.
And, as always..."Think Ink!"

As Kermit the frog once said, “It ain’t easy being green.” And as a moderator for a group, sometimes, it ain’t easy deciding what “goes in, and what stays out.”
On the subject of submissions, we’ve had to turn down quite a few lately; which is painful, because the work has really been good! I thought it best to address this in a journal so that everyone would understand why.
In toto, this is a traditional black ink group, which means, we feature artwork rendered by traditional methods, be it with brush, quill, ball-point pen, marker, fingers, toes, whatever you use to make marks on paper, as l
New Year Greetings
The New Year is upon us, and that means reassessing the goals and aspirations of last year, and planning for the year ahead!
One project that I’m currently involved with is a Kickstarter Campaign for my new sketchbook, One Year After: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/275887589/one-year-after-a-sketchbook
My first, it’s been quite a eye-opening experience as I’m learning what works and what doesn’t. What is interesting to me is how fluid the process is, and in this age of instant communication, how social media plays such a huge role in people’s lives and connects us to others on a global scale.

'Changing Horses...
...in the middle of a stream, gets you wet and sometimes, cold.”
Over the last five years, I’ve lived in five different places. The longest residence during that time was my three year tenure in China, the shortest was the seven months I lived on a beautiful farm in the middle of Whidbey Island, Washington before I moved to China. Now I’m back in Washington State in an apartment. Soon, I’ll be moving closer to Seattle.
Once upon a time, I had a “proper” studio, cram-packed with shelves for reference books, stuffed animals, origami, figurines and skulls. A large, antique dresser jammed with art suppl
5 Questions
Although any time is a good time to appraise your progress as an artist, the calendar beginning of each year seems to prod us in that direction. In that spirit, let’s look at a few questions:
1). What kind of art do you want to be known for?
Have you ever thought about this? Many artists have not. One day, they want to try graphite. The next week, it’s on to ink. After that, they may indulge in pastels, or colored-pencils, or crayon! While this is fine for experimentation and exploration, when it comes time to present your art, what comes through is a lack of expertise and focus in any one given area. This doesn’t
